WP4: Prototype
Goal of this work package is to develop the wireless network, install and test the Volcano Fast Response System (land and sea parts) and coordinate the whole project. A key to the success of the volcano fast response system is its wireless network that allows the fast deployment of additional instrumentation in addition to an existing network. The network will be based on so called meshnodes which build a selforganized multipoint to multipoint network, which reroutes data via a new connection once a single connection fails.
The VFRS itself will be tested in a prototype installation on the Azores because there is currently an unclear situation at Fogo volcano on Sao Miguel near Ponta Delgada. Fogo volcano is showing seismic unrest since May 2002 and GPS measurements indicate a deflation on the NE flanks of Fogo volcano. The test installation includes a land and marine part that will be deployed at the same time. The installation of the VFRS (land part) is scheduled for early 2009 because by that time the basic functionality of the system will be available. Two local partners will help at test installation: CVRAG and the University of the Azores. The associated marine expedition will also take place in 2009. Carrying out the installation much later would not leave enough time to improve the system. This will be achieved through replaying the data collected during the prototype installation in real time to further develop the functionality of the system.
