Field test location

A main part of the development of the Volcano Fast Response system is a field test. As the system is designed to also allow the incorporation of marine based data, we chose Sao Miguel (Azores Islands) as a test location. The volcano Fogo near Ponta Delgada has shown signs of unrest during the last years making him a good target for the system.

Marine instruments

A total of 10 ocean bottom seismometers and 4 ocean bottom tiltmeters will be deployed near the island of Sao Miguel. The ocean bottom stations will be recovered during August 2009. Before the recovery we will use so called airguns at sea to record these shots over the marine and land network. This will allows us to develop a rough 3D model of Fogo volcano, which will improve the hazard assessment in this region. Those data will further be used to better constrain the magmatic system on the island as well as faults and other so far not well researched questions regarding the activity of Fogo volcano.
